Holy Rats

The Rat Temple at Deshnoke, India: "In Deshnoke, India, which is near Bikaner by the border to Pakistan, there's a temple devoted to the worship of the rat. It seems that these rats will be born in the next life as sadhus, or Hindu holy men. So hundreds of thousands of them teem together--and stink together--throughout the temple. And, of course, since it's holy, all visitors must remove their shoes to enter.
The rats are fed milk and meal, which pilgrims drink and eat afterward. It's considered a blessing to eat food drenched with rat saliva. It's also considered lucky to spot a white rat here.

The Norway Rat actually came from Asia...

Pictures of pet rats. Stock photography, photos, nature and travel images, fine art prints.: "The domesticated rat, although often called the Norway rat (rattus norvegicus), actually came from Asia Minor and colonized Europe in the early 18th century. They were called Norway rats because they arrived in large numbers on Norwegian shipping vessels. On their arrival, they quickly spread and drove out the native black rats (rattus rattus) because they were larger and more adaptable. Out of their success, the occupation of rat-catcher was born and England's royal rat catcher, Jack Black, is credited as the originator of the first domesticated rat. Jack Black raised and bred rats in captivity and eventually had many different varieties including albino, fawn, black, grey, and marked, which he sold as pets. Today many more varieties are available including all sorts of colors and markings. Since they have been bred to be friendly and docile, they make excellent pets.

There is much prejudice against rats because in many parts of the world wild rats remain a major pest and are responsible for the transmission of diseases and consuming large portions of the world's food harvest. However, rats are crucial to scientific research and have made many contributions to human health by serving as a model organism. They were the first mammalian species domesticated for research and almost all human genes linked with disease have counterparts in the rat."

Rats are ticklish too...

petrats: "Pet rats are not like their wild cousins. Pet rats are actually very lovable, affectionate, and one of the most intelligent rodent pets. They can be taught tricks, and they can even learn to help clean their cages! Ancient Romans recognized how incredible rats were and considered them to be good luck. The Chinese consider rats as symbols of prosperity while the Japanese have considered rats to be messengers of the gods. Most people don't know that pet rats are ticklish too. Pet rats have very sensitive bellies, and they will let out a high-pitched laugh when tickled. In addition, their sense of balance is so sharp that they can use it to predict earthquakes! What makes these animals even more impressive is how easy it is to take care of them. Give your pet rats a Deluxe Care Home with plenty of lab blocks or food pellets to eat, and they will love you for it. Since pet rats like to chew, placing Swiss Chews in their cages will help them keep their teeth in shape. You can watch it exercise in its Comfort Wheel or take it for walks with its Comfort Harness and Stretchy Stroller Leash. Rats can run 2-3 miles in a night so they will appreciate any exercise you can give them. Rats also love to swim. In fact, they have been known to swim up to a half mile and be able to stay under water for as long as 3 minutes!"
