Rats make good companions for children

When well socialized, rats make good companions for children. They require toys to chew on - the chewing keeps them mentally and physically healthy. Fun, yet simple, things include wooden toys, untreated cardboard and hard dog biscuits.

Rats also enjoy supervised time sharing affections outside of their habitat. Inside their habitat, Durable, safe toys and clean bedding are a must.

Rats enjoy a simple place to hide, too - cardboard boxes, baskets and durable plastic items make cozy homes. Bedding should be soft and absorbent; there are several fine products available at pet supply stores. Avoid pine or cedar wood shavings as their oils are harmful to animals.

Rats are intelligent, social critters who prefer to be in the company of people and other rats (but only if they are the same sex or altered). Quiet and easy to care for, rats are especially good with children; and yes, they are quite clean.
