(11/04/05 - UNDATED) - Computer users getting familiar with cyber-evils called viruses, worms and phish are now warned about RATs.
RAT is a computer acronym for Remote Access Trojans. Trojans, as in the Trojan Horse, is cyber-speak for a bug that computer criminals manage to hide inside PC's and laptops that access the Internet through DSL or cable connections.
RATs can worm their way onto your computer in any number of ways disguised as free software, file sharing programs or electronic greeting cards.
They attack when you type in your password to a bank or buy something online. When you log onto a website, the RAT comes out of hiding and copies your key strokes. That gives the hacker the opportunity to steal your identity by making whatever personal information you've provided to the website available to the crooks controlling the RAT.
Banks, reportedly the favorite RAT food, are scurrying to develop anti-RAT security features. Bank of America is in the forefront, already requiring more information than just passwords and usernames.
At A2Z Computer Repair, James Ashton highly recommends installing a hardware router to block Internet access to you computer.
Install several anti-spyware scanners and an anti-virus program. He likes Avg-Free.
Set your computer to receive Windows Updates automatically because. "The programs these people are using now are so up to date that the just add a couple of variable and bang three days later they've already got a worm out."
He also recommends picking a browser that's more restrictive and less likely to allow the Internet to install malicious software. A serious RAT infestation may require re-installing Windows from scratch to win the Internet Trojan war.
